Twenty-five beastly portraits.
Monochrome silk screen prints.
Leffe Goldstein likes watching animals in wild and urban environments. “I enjoy spending time around my furry friends. Their honesty and instincts are fascinating. If only they could speak.” He says with a smile. These new screen prints in monochrome are an exercise in working with curves. The strong, minimal lines create a bold, graphic vocabulary; a universal alphabet of animalian characters, with individual attitudes and personalities. Combining the mathematical precision of vector art with his love of nature proved inspiring. “I was intrigued by what happened when I made one tiny, directional shift or removed one line or detail. Somehow, the personality of the animal is revealed even more as detail is stripped away. Once I’d started, I just kept experimenting until I got what I wanted.”
Wicked and furry they may be. Fluffy they f***ing ain’t.
About the artist
Born in 1971 in Roosendaal, Leffe Goldstein is a fine artist and craftsman with specialisms in graphic design and photography. From 1986 to 1991 he studied at the Institute for Fine Art and Craft in Antwerp (SISA), where he specialised in graphic design. From 1991 to 1995 he studied at the University of the Arts in Utrecht, specializing in photography. He lives and works in Utrecht.
Recognized for his distinctive use of strong geometric shapes and super-flat aesthetic, Goldstein’s style continues to be influenced by his travels in Japan and his engagement with the underground art scene, pop culture, anime and manga. Echoes of the avant garde design of the 1920s and 30s are present in Goldstein’s graphics and typography.
